Life from a spiritual perspective
Our goal in offering these summits to the community is to see life from a spiritual perspective, which can bring healing to physical, mental and relationship issues. In these talks, listeners are challenged to question the inevitability of mental and physical disease, age, and decline.
Through a deeper understanding of God, all can realize innate freedom and health. The speakers, both members of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship, will present ideas based on the Bible and the teachings of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. As we open thought to infinite possibilities, we find solutions to life’s problems.

How Spiritual Perception
Bring Healing
Alex practiced law in France and in the United States for several years. As a litigation lawyer in France, he used to argue cases in court and did his best to meet the clients needs. Practicing law was not just his job, it was a passion. In his childhood, Alex read law books for pleasure and attended court hearings. To him, being a lawyer meant precision in thinking and a desire to help others get out of trouble.
During those legal years, Alex got more and more interested in Christian Science. At first, he was just impressed by its remarkable healings and resolutions. But as he dug deeper, Alex found a profound spirituality. To him back then, religion and spirituality meant accepting a system of beliefs and the letting go of discernment and critical thinking. But the more Alex studied and practiced this deep spirituality, the more he found that it was not about believing in anything. It was about exercising critical thinking in understanding spiritual concepts, which in turn could be applied to one’s life to bring healing.
Alex gradually gave up his law practice and became a full time Christian Science practitioner.
He says:
“I’m not a lawyer anymore, but I still work to help others get out of trouble, to get out of a sense of limitations, to find more freedom. But the way I see it, Christian Science is not just about feeling better or fixing problems. It’s about being willing to challenge one’s world view as entirely molecule based and soulless, to be open to see the world as spiritually based, and experience how this change in perspective brings inner peace and healing. It is about understanding more clearly our relationship with God, infinite good. It is about understanding Christ Jesus’ message in a non dogmatic way, bringing healing, harmony and freedom to our life.”

Giving Freely of Ourselves
and What we All Gain
After finishing a doctorate in mathematics, Melanie became a college professor and truly enjoyed teaching. She found that teaching was less about telling students something than facilitating the students’ discoveries of new concepts.
She says: “There was nothing better than witnessing a reluctant student realize that a previously mystifying concept was actually within reach to anyone.”
But the higher promise of Christian Science beckoned Melanie to help people redeem and uplift their lives in a fuller way. When students came to her office for help with calculus, they often found themselves talking about the joy and excitement of growing spirituality. After just two years at the college, she resigned from her position and began accepting calls as a Christian Science practitioner. She wrote articles for the Christian Science periodicals, was a frequent guest on Sentinel radio, and began advertising her full-time practice in The Christian Science Journal in 2004. She and her husband also started a family.
These days Melanie loves working from her home office in the Los Angeles area. She likes to see lives transformed by the healing ideas of Christian Science, where “we ourselves are helped and, at the same time, find we can help others”. Melanie’s life as a mom has a lot of the same focus. And whether the spiritual ideas apply to health issues, school, social lives, or sports, her three teenagers push Melanie to “keep it real”.
“Two influences on me that I’ll never forget were the Christian Science Sunday School and a mom who turned to prayer and encouraged me to do the same. These influences showed me something of the reliability of God and spiritual inspiration, and trusting this helped me find my way growing up. Significant healing experiences with relationship and food issues, and violence in the community, were also unforgettable. From this, I got an idea of the many ways that Christian Science can transform lives.”
