Finding Strength in the Storm: How We Can Weather Severe Weather with Faith and Hope

by | May 15, 2023 | Talks that Inspire

We had a “big” winter here at Lake Tahoe. Roofs collapsed under the weight of months of snowfall. There were daily traffic accidents and road delays because of the relentless ice and snow. Severe weather events like this extreme winter, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and wildfires can be frightening and devastating. In the face of such natural disasters, it can be helpful to turn to Christian Science principles for comfort and guidance. These principles can help us understand that God’s love and protection are always with us, even in the midst of challenging circumstances.

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, wrote extensively on the topic of weather and its relationship to God’s infinite power and love. In her book, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” she writes,

“The atmosphere of the earth, kinder than the atmosphere of mortal mind, leaves catarrh to the latter. Colds, coughs and contagion are engendered solely by human theories.” (P.240:14)
The fluidity and potency of this belief, of which the material body is the counterfeit, will depend upon the individual’s faith in the divine Principle of Being. This passage explains that our thoughts and beliefs have a direct impact on our health and the environment around us.

If we hold onto negative and fearful thoughts, we may attract or exacerbate severe weather events. On the other hand, if we focus our thoughts on God’s love and protection, we can help to calm and harmonize the atmosphere.

In the Bible, there are many examples of individuals who turned to God for help during times of severe weather. One such example is found in the book of Psalms, where it says, “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed” (Psalm 107:29, NIV). This passage reminds us that God has the power to calm even the most violent storms, and that we can trust in His protection.

Another passage from the book of Proverbs says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10, NIV). This verse reminds us that when we turn to God for help and protection, we are always safe and secure.

In Christian Science, we understand that God’s love and protection are not limited by physical conditions. Even in the face of severe weather events, we can trust that God’s infinite love and care are always present. As Eddy writes in “Science and Health,” “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (p. 494).

Severe weather events can be challenging and frightening, but remember that we are never alone. God’s infinite love and protection are always with us, and we can trust in His care even in the midst of difficult circumstances. As we turn our thoughts to God and affirm His presence and power, we can help to calm and harmonize the atmosphere and find peace and comfort in even the most challenging situations.
